| I've done a lot of business over the years with folks who sell garden seeds, tools and supplies. The catalogs recommended on this page, while not all specifically for northern gardeners, offer varieties of vegetables, flowers and other plants that are hardy for our region or in the case of vegetables, will ripen in our short season climates. For instance, Gurney's Seed & Nursery Company offers some short season varieties suitable for the north country, such as the delectable "Northern Extra Sweet corn. I've also purchased quality seeds and supplies from Jung's and organic seeds from Johnny's Selected Seeds. Johnny's catalog also includes cultural information on how to grow each crop. Speaking of organic, Seeds of Change offers organic heirloom, traditional and rare seeds to help preserve the seeds that have been passed down from generation to generation. The seeds from these plants can be saved to plant the following year. I also like Veseys. Their nursery is located in the north country. So most of their seeds are for plants that are hardy for the north. They also carry an impressive line of hardy roses and shrubs in the Vesey's Roses and Flowering Shrub catalog. Sooner or later insects will take up residence on your plants, if they haven't all ready. If you're leery of using toxic chemicals to control your insect population, choose from some relatively safe (always read precautions on the labels) pesticides from GardensAlive. They also sell environmentally safe cleaning products and pet supplies. If you're looking for quantity (for instance a commercial greenhouse) and good service, check out Stokes for seeds and A.M. Leonard for tools. Happy Gardening |
